Arp makes a wide range of high strength fastener products.
One widely use product in the import world is head studs. From na to forced induction, engine builders use these studs to contain a good strong head seal.
The thing that always gets me about arp head studs is the lack of info on the installation in the package. If you visit their website you will find plenty of information. But the average do it your selfer may not catch all the crazy info. So below you will find some added info.
Starting with the head off.
Clean mating surface of head and block.
Blow out head bolt holes throughly. You are trying to get any liquid or material. A pocket of fluid will cause you to pull all the threads out of the block. (bad times)
Next decide if you are using arp moly lude (preferred) or 30wt motor oil?
Take your head studs and apply lube to the threads. Easiest way to pack threads with lube is to, take two studs and rotate the threads into each other. This will force the lude through the threads evenly.
Install studs into block using your hands. If you feel binding you may have a bur and need to chase the threads. When stud bottoms out, rotate it out a few revolution and then back down. You may find it to rotate smother. You want the studs to thread smoothly to make your final torque more accurate. Thread stud in all the way hand tight. do this for all studs.
install head gasket or necessary products to install head
When installing head onto studs it is best to have help
Lower head all the way down to mating surface. check that head seats completely before continuing.
Using the same lube as on the head studs threads. Lubricate both sides of arp washers. Install washers onto head stud.
Taking that same lube. Lube the threads of the arp nuts. If you have a bolt of the same pitch and diameter. You can use it to evenly force lube into the threads. hand tighten all nuts.
Using manufactures torque sequence torque arp head stud nuts to arp specs. Note there are different specs for the lube being used.
With all the proper steps taken you should have accurately torqued your head studs into place. |
