Through the year Toyota has been using valve buckets to adjust valve lash.
Picture below shows the three major types of bucket
left over bucket, middle under bucket, right solid bucket.
Over bucket shim is has a large flat shim between cam and bucket. heaviest setup and possibility of losing shim at high rpms.
Under bucket shim is bucket over smaller shim. lighter than previous design. But harder to adjust valve lash. Cam has to be removed and calculate clearances.
Solid bucket design is one piece is various thicknesses. Even lighter by a slight amount. Still hard to adjust valve lash due to cams having to be removed. The real down fall is that these buckets cost $15-25 ea from Toyota.
The problem that Project Import recently ran into. A customers brought in an mr2 for cam install and tune. We had work on the car before but only on the stand alone and fuel side.
The Mr2 motor was a generation two but the owner didn't know he had generation 3 valve train. The problem was we had tons of over bucket shims in stock and 1zzfe solid bucket in stock but no under bucket shims.
We swapped out the under bucket shims for our 1zzfe solid bucket set up. They fit perfectly but the thickness don't go high enough to get correct valve lash. smallest sized bucket 5.060mm going up to 5.740mm largest size shim
So now we had to track down under bucket 13mm diameter shims. Well after much digging turns out Kawasaki motorcycles use these same under bucket shims. So if your ever need under bucket shims find a local Kawasaki dealership. The one we went to had almost every size needed. It also appears that the over bucket shims for toyota's maybe the same as older Kawasaki bikes.
all Toyota dealers had very few if any shims in stock. Kawasaki seem to have every size and many available. Made our install easier and learned something new.
